Sonic Street Tecnologies

As a researcher in the Sonic Street Technologies (SST) project, funded by the European Research Council and based at Goldsmiths, University of London, I investigate aparelhagens—Amazonian sound systems originating from Pará, Brazil. In the context of this research, this publication, developed in collaboration with Maria Luiza de Barros, offers a comprehensive overview of the state of the art on the cultural phenomenon of aparelhagens and its broader context.

The SST project explores street music cultures, often originating in the Global South, where outdoor music plays an essential role in many popular cultures. The publication compiles diverse materials, including academic publications, podcasts, YouTube videos, and other sources, addressing aspects such as history, music, technology, industry, fashion, ethics, business models, and socio-political issues related to the universe of aparelhagens. Available in the Resources section of the SST website, the material is designed for researchers, professionals, and enthusiasts.

Additionally, we wrote a blog detailing the methodology used to create this review, highlighting key trends and significant gaps in the existing research. This mapping of aparelhagens provides a solid foundation for deeper investigations and future studies.
