For Sonic Street Technologies

This playlist of electronic music from Pará, Brazil, was curated to accompany the article and photo essay The Music Technology of Urban Amazonia, which looks into the culture of aparelhagens in Belém.

Aparelhagens are amazonian sound systems

They are mobile large-scale setups that combine powerful speakers, dazzling light displays, and a strong sense of community. The cultural movement around the sound systems embodies the creativity and identity of Brazil’s urban Amazonia.

This playlist forms part of ongoing research within the Sonic Street Technologies (SST) project, funded by the European Research Council (ERC) and based at Goldsmiths, University of London. Within this framework, my work examines the aparelhagens to better understand the social, economic, and cultural dynamics that shape and are expressed through these sound systems.

The playlist is updated regularly with new tracks to reflect the vibrancy and constant evolution of the local music scene.
